Hanai=Love

Today, I reflect on the life of a remarkable woman—a friend, a mentor, and an adopted mother in every sense of the word. It has taken me a very long time to find the words to express my sentiment. I am saddened that I am unable to attend her memorial, but my love and admiration is there in spirit. My heart goes out to Dr. Maurer and the entire Maurer family.  Thank you all for always welcoming me.

Suzanne Maurer embodied a love so pure and steadfast that it could only have been rooted in Christ Himself. Her presence in my life was a gift, a constant reminder of God’s grace, mercy, and unconditional love.

Suzanne (she always wanted me to call her by her first name, but it felt disrespectful not to call her Ms. Maurer) had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued. Through her words, she spoke life into my heart, reminding me of my worth and calling in Christ. But her love didn’t stop with words—it poured out through her actions. Whether it was a kind gesture, a homemade chocolate chip cookie, an offer to type a paper, or a moment of prayer, she always found a way to serve with humility and joy.

What stood out most about her was how she carried the love of Jesus everywhere she went. It wasn’t just something she talked about; it was something she lived. Her faith shone brightly, even in the most challenging seasons. She taught me that love is not just a feeling, but a choice—an intentional act of caring, forgiving, and giving even when it’s hard.

Her impact on my life cannot be overstated. She stepped into the role of “mom” when I needed it most. Being far away from my home and adapting to college life, she was there when I needed it. She didn’t have to, but she chose to, and that choice changed my life forever.

Though my heart aches in her absence, I find comfort in knowing she is now in the presence of the Savior she loved so much. She ran her race with faithfulness and left behind a legacy of love that will continue to inspire me and so many others.

I thank God for the time we shared, for her wisdom, her laughter, and her unwavering support. Mrs. Maurer (Suzanne), you showed me what it means to love like Jesus, and I will carry your lessons with me always. Until we meet again, I will strive to honor your memory by living out the same love you so freely gave.

With all my love and gratitude, I miss you dearly.
